Technical Director London / flexibleKey Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Governance
- Define and implement technical and engineering standards for all BESS, renewable, and data centre projects.
- Provide technical assurance across origination, due diligence, development, and investment phases.
- Lead design, grid connection, and engineering reviews to ensure robustness and compliance.
- Develop technical due diligence frameworks and assess project feasibility, constructability, and long-term performance.
- Ensure compliance with UK and EU grid, planning, and environmental frameworks.
Commercial & Investment Alignment
- Collaborate with the CIO and Financial Modeller to translate technical inputs into financial models (CAPEX, OPEX, degradation, risk allowances).
- Assess project deliverability and grid readiness to ensure only executable projects progress.
- Support investment committees by articulating technical risks, mitigations, and value drivers.
- Provide input on project valuation and risk-weighted returns, aligning technical and commercial strategies.
Project Development & Delivery Oversight
- Lead multidisciplinary teams through design, procurement, and construction to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.
- Oversee EPC scope, tender reviews, and technical contract negotiations.
- Coordinate with developers, consultants, and EPCs to maintain quality, cost, and performance standards.
- Provide hands-on leadership during construction, resolving engineering challenges.
- Monitor and report technical progress, risks, and performance metrics to senior leadership and investors.
Procurement, Partnerships & Supply Chain
- Engage with EPCs, OEMs, and suppliers to secure optimal solutions for batteries, electrical infrastructure, and critical systems.
- Negotiate technical aspects of EPC and O&M contracts with legal and investment teams.
- Establish preferred vendor frameworks and drive cost efficiency across the portfolio.
Operational & Asset Performance Oversight
- Develop technical performance and asset management frameworks (availability KPIs, warranty compliance, degradation analysis).
- Collaborate with the Financial Modeller to integrate operational data into reforecasts and valuations.
- Ensure SCADA, EMS, and monitoring systems support robust long-term performance analytics.
Stakeholder & Partner Management
- Engage with DNOs/TNOs on grid connection strategy and interconnection design.
- Represent in technical discussions with investors, partners, and developers.
- Contribute to investor materials and data rooms, ensuring technical content is clear and robust.
Key Requirements
Experience & Skills
- Degree-qualified in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Energy Engineering (Chartered Engineer preferred).
- 10+ years' experience in renewable energy, BESS, or data centre infrastructure delivery.
- Strong experience in technical due diligence, design management, and project delivery.
- Proven ability to link engineering decisions to commercial outcomes.
- Experience managing EPCs, OEMs, and consultants across the full project lifecycle.
- Solid understanding of UK grid systems, planning, and permitting processes.
- Financial literacy able to review project models, IRRs, and sensitivity analyses.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
