Job Description

The Research Assistant supports investigators by performing moderately complex research and experimentation following established protocols; performs routine lab and equipment maintenance, such as cleaning glassware, counter tops, and equipment; sets-up and operates various scientific apparatus; assists with research projects and may perform independent research; performs various clerical and editorial duties; compiles, processes and analyzes data; performs supervisory and training duties. Primary responsibilities include assisting with research projects, performing independent research, planning, designing and implementing research projects; preparing and maintaining culture media, reagents, and experimental animals; growing cultures; administering injections; performing various assays; sterilizing equipment; separating and purifying various materials and substances using techniques such as chromatography and electrophoresis; ordering laboratory supplies; performing library research; preparing compounds; interpreting experimental test data; performing minor equipment repairs; cutting, staining and mounting specimens. Sets-up and operates scientific apparatus including spectrophotometer, fraction collectors, centrifuges, incubators, homogenizers, and microscopes. Performs clerical duties such as typing, answering phones, preparing correspondence, maintaining bibliographies, and completing applications and forms. Compiles, processes and analyzes data; records research procedures and results; files and maintains records; codes data for electronic data processing; inputs and retrieves data using computers. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge desired includes laboratory techniques, RT-PCR, histology, mRNA extraction, use and preparation of culture media, chemicals, and reagents. Requires verbal and written communication skills, supervisory skills, interpersonal skills, attention to detail, record and inventory maintenance, and computer operation. Minimum qualification is a Bachelor’s degree in science or a closely related field. The position is part of the Biochemistry & Molecular Biology department with a tradition of excellence and state-of-the-art facilities.
