Overview The Office of Information Technology (OIT) at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking skilled professionals to support a wide range of program and technical services across the institute. This is a remote position with occasional onsite visits required for key personnel to support collaboration, planning, and program delivery. The NICHD OIT team provides full lifecycle IT support, helping the institute maintain a secure, efficient, and modern technology environment. Team members will work alongside NIH scientists, administrators, and stakeholders to deliver innovative, compliant, and user-centered digital solutions that advance NICHD’s strategic goals. What Youll do Conduct manual and automated accessibility testing for websites, web applications, documents (PDFs, Word, PowerPoint), multimedia content, and broadcast emails. Evaluate compliance against Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards using tools such as: Automated: aXe, WAVE, Lighthouse, Pa11y, ANDI Manual: NVDA, JAWS, PAC 3.0, keyboard navigation Collaborate with the Accessibility Lead and development teams to: Identify accessibility issues Log and track defects Verify remediations and re-test resolved issues Issue Certificates of Compliance for digital materials that pass accessibility requirements. Assist in preparing monthly accessibility reports, including counts of reviewed artifacts and summary of compliance status. Provide feedback and suggestions to content owners for remediating non-compliant materials. Help support delivery of up to 12 accessibility training sessions per year and up to 4 new training modules. Ensure accessibility testing is integrated into the Agile development lifecycle, with appropriate documentation at EPLC checkpoints. Participate in team meetings, sprint reviews, and planning sessions to embed accessibility testing in project workflows. Required knowledge and skills Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field. 2–4 years of experience in software testing or quality assurance, with at least 1–2 years focused on accessibility testing. Strong understanding of: Section 508 standards WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines ARIA roles and attributes Hands-on experience with assistive technologies and testing tools such as NVDA, JAWS, aXe, WAVE, and PAC 3.0. Familiarity with testing across multiple document types (PDF, Word, PowerPoint). Experience working in Agile environments and using bug tracking tools (e.g., JIRA, Azure DevOps). Abilities Identify and document accessibility issues across digital content using both manual and automated testing methods. Collaborate effectively with developers, designers, and content owners to explain accessibility issues and remediation strategies. Interpret Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 standards and apply them practically across various content formats. Prioritize testing efforts based on risk, impact, and compliance requirements. Communicate clearly in both written and verbal formats, especially when documenting findings or providing feedback. Adapt quickly to new testing tools, accessibility standards, and content types. Advocate for inclusive digital experiences and promote a culture of accessibility awareness. Nice to haves Experience working with NIH, HHS, or other federal government IT projects. Knowledge of document remediation tools (Adobe Acrobat Pro, CommonLook). Experience participating in accessibility audits and generating compliance documentation. Experience delivering or supporting accessibility training sessions. Salary Range Salary range is $95,000-115,000/year. The salary range for this position reflects a variety of factors that influence compensation decisions, including skills, experience, training, certifications, and organizational needs.
