Job Description

• Patient Caseload Management

  • Provide psychiatric care to an average of 40 patients across two wards

  • Conduct patient evaluations monthly , with additional visits as clinically indicated

  • Daily rounds not required unless patients are under special precautions

• Patient Population & Legal Statuses

  • Treat individuals with varying legal classifications, including:

    • NGRI (Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity)

    • VBG (Voluntary by Guardian)

    • PIST (Permanently Incompetent to Stand Trial)

    • VBG, formerly PIST

    • SVP (Sexually Violent Predator)

  • Familiarity with legal standards related to court-ordered conditional release is essential

• Clinical Documentation

  • Complete timely and accurate documentation including:

    • Admission and discharge summaries

    • Monthly progress notes

    • Annual evaluations

    • As-needed clinical updates based on changes in status

• Diagnosis & Treatment

  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessments and ongoing treatment

  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications

  • Make appropriate referrals and consultations for therapy, specialty care, or medical services

• Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Participate in weekly treatment team meetings for assigned wards

  • Collaborate with nursing, psychology, social work, pharmacy, medical, dietary, and recreational therapy teams

  • Provide clinical leadership and input into treatment planning

• Psychiatric Officer of the Day (OD) Coverage

  • Serve as OD 2 4 times per week , covering one of two daily weekday shifts:

    • 7:00 AM 12:00 PM

    • 12:00 PM 5:00 PM

  • No after-hours, weekend, or holiday call required unless voluntarily accepted

  • Additional compensation is provided for optional on-call shifts , including medical and psychiatric backup coverage

• Admissions & Discharges

  • Manage psychiatric aspects of long-term admissions and discharges , with average lengths of stay measured in months rather than days

• Meetings & Professional Engagement

  • Participate in medical staff meetings (6 per year) and team/staff meetings as needed

  • Engage in case consultations, patient concerns reviews, and special staffings

• Additional Duties (As Credentialed)
  May include:

  • Supervision of psychiatric services and advanced practice providers

  • Development and oversight of multidisciplinary treatment plans

  • Provision of individual, group, family, or behavioral therapy

  • Substance use treatment interventions

  • Guardianship and court-related evaluations (e.g., for conditional/unconditional release)

  • Court testimony and expert opinion preparation
