Overview

General Dynamics Electric Boat provides an unparalleled learning experience for college students, offering practical exposure in the defense industry alongside expert engineers, shaping the future of submarine innovation.

Engineers at Electric Boat work collaboratively across departments and with our customer to develop innovative solutions for the United States Navy's nuclear submarines. As an Intern, you'll be exposed to various engineering activities with the support of our senior staff. This program grants our trainees the opportunity to develop valuable skills and dive into cutting-edge projects such as leading the Columbia Class design and enhancing Virginia Class submarines. Every intern will be exposed to a wealth of knowledge in order to excel in the engineering domain.

This program requires a minimum commitment of 8 weeks during the Summer 2026 Season.

Participation in this program requires medical screening, passing a drug test, and potential DOD Investigation

CONFORM (Concept Formulation) - Summer Internship

Job Description:

The Concept Formulation (CONFORM) team oversees EB's concept development work which includes leading SSN(X) and program insertion studies, research and development (R&D) efforts, university and small business outreach, payload integration, and warfare analysis. The CONFORM department champions the continuous infusion of warfighting capability into submarines to maintain EB's leadership position within the industry, and to ensure that U.S. submarines remain relevant in the future world of undersea warfare. Groups within CONFORM, relative to this internship, include:

  • The Capability Insertions group assists keeping EB as the premier integrator of weapons, unmanned systems, and manned submersibles aboard U.S. nuclear submarines. Also, responsible for surveying emerging technologies areas to identify potential opportunities for current and future submarines.

  • The Research and Development (R&D) group includes internally funded independent research and development (IR&D), shipyard technology R&D (SY4.0), and capability and technology team (CATT) studies; externally funded contract research and development (CR&D) with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Navy Undersea Technology Office (NAVSEA073); and university and small business outreach including collaboration with the National Institute of Undersea Vehicle Technology (NIUVT), other university research opportunities such as senior design Capstone projects, and small business collaboration to identify and develop new technologies that are consumable by the submarine fleet.

Within the CONFORM group Summer Interns may be responsible for the following tasks:
    \n
  • Research different payloads (kinetic, countermeasures, SOF, and UUV) that could be integrated into various platforms
  • \n
  • Assist R&D leads in their various swim lanes
  • \n
  • Brainstorm and present future submarine concepts
  • \n

Qualifications

To be qualified for this position:
    \n
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • \n
  • US citizenship is required.
  • \n
  • Must be able to successfully pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check.
  • \n
  • Must be enrolled full-time at a college or university
  • \n
  • At minimum students must have completed their Freshman year prior to the start of the internship.
  • \n
  • Must be available to work 40 hours per week for a minimum eight (8) consecutive weeks between May 2026 to September 2026.
  • \n
  • Selected candidates will be responsible for establishing housing and reliable transportation for the duration of their intern assignment.
  • \n
  • \n Pursuing a Bachelor or Masters of Science Degree in Engineering; preferred Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture Engineering, or Systems Engineering.
